Chapter Eight
Caitlyn stood outside the door to Lucas’s place, debating whether or not she should knock. It was well after eleven p.m.—way too late for a visit. She’d started to turn around twice on the drive over here, but something kept her going.
It was Christmas night, and she’d spent the entire day in a whirlwind of activity that had begun at her parents’ house, unwrapping gifts with Mom, Dad and Lochlan. Then they’d driven to the pub for a huge family meal. The family was too large to comfortably fit in anyone’s house, so each year they gathered at the pub, opening presents, singing carols, drinking too much Jameson, while talking and laughing until they were all hoarse.
This year’s festivities had lasted until a couple hours ago, at which point Caitlyn had crawled into her own bed at home, exhausted from the day. However, she’d tossed and turned, too restless to sleep, and then she realized what was keeping her up.
Lucas.
He’d confided in her a couple of days ago that his Christmas day consisted of a quiet breakfast at his mother’s house, a late lunch with his dad at the country club, and then—this was the part that had really gotten to her—he simply spent the evening at home. Alone. The whole thing sounded dreadful to her.
Lonely and depressing.
They’d only seen each other a handful of times since the night on the yacht, so it wasn’t as if they were in an actual relationship, or at least, they weren’t to the place where that’s what they were calling it. And they certainly hadn’t progressed to something serious enough to warrant an invitation to spend the holiday with her family.
God, she could imagine her uncles’ faces if she’d shown up with Lucas in tow. They were only just barely holding their tongues about the fact she was still seeing the man. She had Mom and Riley to thank for the restraint on their parts. However, that control would have been sorely tested if she’d poured Lucas a glass of eggnog from Grandma Sunday’s crystal punch bowl.
So far, since the night on the yacht, they’d gone out to dinner three times and lunch twice, and all five times had ended in red-hot, blow-the-roof-off-the-house sex.
Every time she saw him again, she swore she’d show some self-control. Then he’d whisper “Cait” in her ear, in that deep, demanding way, and the next thing she knew, she was naked and bent over whatever piece of furniture was at hand.
Or against whatever wall.
She blushed as she recalled Lucas taking her against the wall in the bathroom of a very ritzy French restaurant on Roland Avenue.
It was madness. And it didn’t show signs of ending anytime soon. The only thing that sort of set her mind at ease was the fact Lucas seemed to be as helpless to resist her as she was him.
But sex wasn’t what had driven her here tonight.
It was the idea that Lucas was alone on Christmas. She didn’t like it.
She lifted her hand and knocked.
